a total of more than 100 million inpatients and outpatients treated, 1.6 million
patients leaving the hospitals after treatment and 500,000 inpatients undergoing
operations, up 20, 18.8 and 15 percent respectively from a year before,
according to the Shanghai Health Bureau.
Last year, local residents' health
indices remained at the average level for developed countries and regions. Of
the 169 projects listed in the three-year plan to build the public health system
of Shanghai, 154 were completed. The system has played a significant role in
preventing bird flu epidemics last year, with a low level of incidence of
various infectious diseases.
As part of the three-year plan to build
Shanghai into a healthy city, health consultation services were established by
more than 2,600 or 90.5 percent of local neighborhood committees and more than
15,000 volunteers serving their communities.
Also last year, the city's
1.43-billion-yuan (US$180 million) community health service network was
launched, with 227 community medical service centers accessible to all residents
within a 15 minutes' walk. The centers also offered services for 350,000 senior
citizens aged above 80.
Shanghai Health Bureau selected 49 highly-qualified
personnel for training as pioneers of the city's medical sector and 101 young
talents aged below 35.
The city was awarded 17 China Medical Science and
Technology awards, 21.8 percent of the national total, ten State Progress of
Science and Technology in Medical Science awards and 50 City Progress of Science
and Technology in Medical Science awards last year.
Local hospitals
implemented more than 3,000 measures for the convenience of patients last year,
with more than 400 innovative medical service projects welcomed by residents.
