City to require the recalling of substandard food

Wendy Zhang/ Shanghai Daily news

Shanghai will issue a regulation next month requiring producers to recall food which may pose a threat to people's health, according to the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration yesterday.
In developed countries, such a system has become important in managing product quality. However, in China, the laws and regulations are not comprehensive enough.
The new regulation, covering all food traded in the city and including that entering the city and having been sold to consumers, will set-out legal guarantees to the recall system. All food having, or likely to have, the potential to harm people's health, or which fails to meet certain standards, will be recalled.
Substandard food will also be rated according to the degree of harm they could do to people's health, and food in the different categories will be required to be withdrawn within differing time limits. Food proven to seriously harm people's health or which could lead to deaths is expected to be withdrawn within 72 hours.
