Shanghai's research into human embryonic stem cells is keeping abreast with
that of the rest of the world, having established six series of cells up to now,
with four of these recognised by global authorities, according to the Shanghai
Municipal Commission for Science and Technology.
Stem cells are the body's
master cells and embryonic stem cells are especially significant because they
can produce any kind of tissue found in the body and can be grown.
To date,
Shanghai has established six series of human embryonic stem cells and, at the
end of last year, experts from home and abroad evaluated four of them and
considered them to be of international standard. Local scientists are currently
working on establishing a cell line specifically for clinical use.
