Three experts from
the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Center on Community Safety
Promotion took a tour and inspected Huamu sub-District yesterday, the first of
its kind in the city. The area is attempting to join the WHO Safe Community
Network (SCN). The inspection results will decide whether or not the Huamu
sub-District in Pudong New Area can join the international SCN. Establishing
safe communities was listed in the city's 11th Five Year Plan (2006-2010). In
June last year, Huamu Sub-district officially kicked off the pitch to become a
SCN. The safe community, proposed by the WHO in 1989, focuses on prevention
against all kinds of harms, especially for high-risk and vulnerable groups, and
high-risk environments.
