The Health School of Shanghai Second Medical University and a nursing
school signed a contract to move into the Shanghai International Medical Zone
yesterday.
The nursing school and medical university affiliate will be
the first to locate their campuses in the medical zone in Nanhui District in
southeast Shanghai.
Vice mayor Yang Xiaodu, who is in charge of local
health and medical affairs, attended yesterday's signing ceremony.
Planning of the Shanghai International Medical Zone, which claims to be
China's first top-level comprehensive medical zone, was publicized last
September. Construction began at the end of last year and is expected to be
complete in five years.
According to the blueprint, the
5.5-square-kilometer zone, located in Nanhui's Zhoukang area, 20 kilometers from
People's Square, will have one joint venture hospital with 500 beds, two or
three international sanatoriums, one state-level medical academic exchange
center, a joint venture medical college, several medical research institutes and
a medical appliances area, combining exhibition, trade, R&D and production.
The total investment for the zone is estimated at 10 billion yuan
(US$1.2 billion).
