Shanghai is to become a medicine research and production center in
China, and the city¡¯s government will provide full service to the medicine
industry, Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng told visiting CEO and board chairman Peter
Dolan of Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMS).
A College of Chinese Herbal Medicine
and a medical institution will be founded in Shanghai to promote local medical
development, Han said.
The value of the medicine output of Shanghai will
reach 50 billion yuan (US$ 6 billion) in 2005. By then, Shanghai will become a
research and production base of China's biochemical industry.
China and
Shanghai are potential medicine markets, Han said. So it's strategically wise of
BMS to enter the local market earlier than other medicine producers. The company
has maintained good cooperation with local enterprises.
The stable
economic growth and sustainable improvement of living standards keep the demand
in medicine and sanitarian growing, which is a good news for the medicine
companies, Han told Peter Dolan.
