Han calls for vigilance against SARS

Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng yesterday urged all city and district governments
to strictly follow the instruction of the central government and step up efforts
to prevent a resurgence of SARS. At yesterday's national television
conference on the prevention and control of severe acute respiratory syndrome
(SARS), Chinese vice-Premier Wu Yi, who directs China's anti-SARS operations,
urged the strict implementing of the daily SARS epidemic reporting system and
warned that people delaying the reporting or hiding the truth would be severely
punished. After the TV meeting, Han said that the city will do its best to
guard against the deadly disease and protect the health of local
residents. He also called on the city governments to reinforce the
establishment of a public health system to increase its capability to cope with
emergency outbreaks. Earlier, the Shanghai Health Bureau adjusted the
previous 400-odd medical facilities to include 160 hospitals in its SARS
monitoring system. The city has been conducting "regular management" after
the epidemic eased in June. The debut of SARS in China in the second quarter
of this year caused huge economic losses, with tourism, retails, catering and
transport businesses suffering the most.
