A Sino-German heart center was established at the Shanghai East Hospital
yesterday in a bid to improve the nation's medical standards on cardiovascular
diseases.
The German partner is the German Heart Center Berlin, which
claims to be the biggest and best institute in the world for such
diseases.
As part of a deal, German experts will come to the hospital
every month to conduct diagnosis and treat Chinese patients.
Meanwhile,
three or four local doctors and nurses will be sent to Berlin for training every
year.
"The Sino-German center provides a good opportunity for Chinese
medical staff to exchange experiences with German experts while introducing the
latest equipment and technology in the world to enhance our level," said Liu
Zhongming, chief of the center.
Cardiovascular diseases are the top
killer in the world. In China, about 150 million people suffer from relative
ailments, such as hypertension, coronary heart disease and miocardial
infarction. The figure for Shanghai is about 2 million, doctors said.
