31/12/2003 18:21

The Health Bureau announced the 5th Shanghai Clinical Medical Research Awards yesterday. Vice mayor Yang Xiaodu attended the awards ceremony.
The awards went to 25 cinical projects in physical, surgical, pediatric, maternity, infectious and herbal medicine.
The highest award was given to Wang Zhengmin for his achievement on the clinical applications for human cochlear implant. Wang, a professor with the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat (EENT) Hospital affiliated to the Fudan University, developed programs to remotely control the implants and made its domestic production possible.
The rest awards went to eight first runner-ups and 16 second runner-ups.
The Shanghai Clinical Medical Research Award is a biennial event held by the Shanghai Health Bureau since 1995. Altogether 219 medical workers responsible for 127 clinical projects have got the award in the past eight years.
Different from the awards for fundamental researches and studies, clinical awards focus exclusively on how much the projects can improve for the patients.
The achievment of Wang, this year's top award winner for example, has cut the cost of cochlear implants to one-fourth of the otherwise imported ones.
The first award winner of the event, dating back to 1995, by the No.1 Shanghai People's Hospital, made more surgeries successful for the detached retinas.
