Hospital emergency rooms renovated

The emergency rooms of Shanghai's 17 city-level hospitals have been
renovated, as one of the Shanghai Municipal Government's 'good deeds' promised
for locals this year. After the renovation, the emergency space has increased
by 56.5 percent from before. A hospital emergency room is separated into
different sections for diagnosis, transfusion and observation. The new
medical facilities can relieve the intense atmosphere in emergency rooms, said
an industry analyst. However, there is still excessive number of patients at
emergency rooms. More than ten temporary beds are placed at the aisles of
Huashan and Renji Hospital, two leading hospitals in Shanghai. In Ruijin
Hospital, transfusion places are added at the aisles from five o'clock in the
afternoon, with all the more than 100 beds for temporary observation fully
occupied. "Renovating emergency rooms cannot solve the fundamental problems,
and hospitals need to make more efforts to improve the relationship between
doctors and patients," said a nurse with ten years of work experience in
emergency rooms of Renji Hospital. Patients need more patience for the time
being, the nurse added.
