City leaders eat poultry products
12/2/2004 18:21

City leaders of Shanghai are eager to have poultry-product-made dishes, carrying a message to local people that poultry product supplies here are absolutely safe.
Most of the leaders having lunch at the municipal government's canteen yesterday order poultry products, expecting to help people get off panic over poultry products since the outbreak of bird flu this year nationwide.
Food on the canteen's menu includes chicken legs, duck slices, eggs as well as poultry cooked in barbecue flavor.
The poultry products are safe, because they are from authorized suppliers and have been completely cooked before serving, according to the suppliers Shanghai Dajiang (Group) Co Ltd and Shanghai Shenteng Livestock & Poultry Co Ltd.
Both companies are leading poultry providers in Shanghai and Shenteng is in Nanhui District where Shanghai's suspected bird flu case was reported on January 30.
At around 11.30 a.m. yesterday, Gong Xueping, dean of the standing committee of Shanghai People's Congress, came to the canteen to have his lunch. He ordered chicken wings and steamed meat with egg.
He said, "It's not contradictory between having safe poultry products and preventing against the spread of bird flu. These products have been processed in high temperatures and are quite safe."
Tang Dengjie, Shanghai's vice mayor, also ordered chicken wings. Claiming the wings are so delicious, he said it's unnecessary to get over sensitive about poultry over the bird flu concern.
"Our canteen supply poultry products as normal and it's to tell people the supplies in Shanghai are safe," he noted.
Other leaders, including Zhou Yupeng, Bao Xinbao, Yan Junqi, Jiang Sixian and Zhou Taitong, had poultry products for their lunch.
