Han: Anti-bird flu efforts paid
24/2/2004 18:22

Efforts to guard Shanghai against bird flu are paid, yet the city should take long-term measures to guarantee food healthy and safety, Shanghai mayor Han Zhen proposed in a government work meeting yesterday.

The city has mobilized all parts to take anti-bird flu actions, and got cooperation from the farmers and all citizens, Han said. Thanks to these efforts and cooperation, the virus is under control currently.

So far, only one bird flu case was discovered in the city¡¯s Nanhui District. An inspection team announced yesterday that the virus hasn't infected any people in Shanghai, and no new cases have been reported since Kangqiao, the only bird flu-broken area in Shanghai, was quarantined.

For the next phase, Shanghai government sets to properly plan and relocate the poultry farms and control the scale of breeding to keep the city safe from bird flu, Han added. Moreover, mature laws and regulations, strict farming standard and market supervisions are necessary to maintain food safety.
