City renovates village clinics

Renovations on all village-based medical institutes in local suburban
areas will be completed this year, with more than 90 percent of village clinics
having reached Grade-A standard to date, according to the Shanghai Drug
Administration Bureau. Village clinics are playing an important role in local
farmers' lives. Over the past several years, most village medical institutes
had poor medical conditions and substandard drug supply channels. In order to
improve the situation, from 2002, the Shanghai Drug Administration Bureau
thoroughly revamped village clinics, with local districts and counties investing
a total of more than 15 million yuan (US$1.8 million) on the project to
date. Chongming County invested six million yuan, establishing qualified
drugstores at 209 clinics, and the Zhujing Town of Jinshan District plans to
build ten clinics. Moreover, all local village doctors have received free
systematic training on drug use. "Previously we would keep using drugs until
they were used up, but now we know drugs cannot be used if they have expired,"
said Zhang Lianfang, a village doctor in Fengxian District with 39 years of
medical experience. He added that currently, the expiry dates of all the drugs
are clearly shown on the calendar.
