Anti-drug campaign goes to school

The Shanghai Education Commission and the city's drug authority jointly
held a symposium for anti-drug education on June 15 at the Beihai Middle School.
During the meetings, they exchanged successful experiences among local secondary
schools. City leaders Liu Yungeng and Yan Junqi attended the
meeting. Faced with rising numbers of youngsters among the city's drug
addicts, starting in 2002 Shanghai launched a model school project for national
drug education. Currently, more than half of the 17,000 drug users on record
with Shanghai's drug authority are juveniles under 18 years' old. Praising
drug education for local middle school students, Liu recognized the importance
of education, saying it is crucial to the nation's overall
development. Governments at all levels must give it top priority to ensure
the technology and the funds to support it, he added. "We must do what is
needed to solve drug education problems in order to keep youngsters away from
drugs," he said. At yesterday's meeting, Yan rewarded Zhongshan Middle
School, Kunming Middle School and Beihai Middle School, all model anti-drug
schools, for their achievements in the anti-drug education
campaign.
