Patients inneed of a blood transfusion can set their hearts at ease thanks to the stable supply of blood, announced the Shanghai Blood Administration Office yesterday.
A growing number of donors have eased the local blood shortage problem. Early this month, some operations had to be delayed due to blood shortages, with hospitals estimating more delays to follow towards the end of August.
After the Shanghai Blood Administration Office called on the residents to donate blood, an increased number of people participated at no charge over the last two weeks. During the last weekend, a total of more than 1,200 volunteers donated blood free of charge, with the 16 mobile blood collection vehicles downtown receiving nearly 600 donors in total.
Currently, about 5,000 bags of blood are in store at the local blood bank.
In order to help the city get through the blood demand peak this summer, more healthy citizens aged between 18 and 55, especially civilian workers, league members, active soldiers and university students, are encouraged to donate blood at their own will.
