Shanghai's morning
post reported the levels of deaths due to breast cancer have almost tripled in
the last three decades and it is now the most likely cause of death for local
women. Citing the results of the latest Shanghai Breast Disease Care Center
survey , the report said nearly 53 out of 100,000 local women developed breast
cancer last year, up 180 percent on figures gained in 1973. According to the
report, incidences of breast cancer have risen for all age groups over 25 , with
those between 45 and 59 witnessing the fastest increase. The rate is higher
downtown then in the suburban and rural areas. Listing marital status and
heredity as the key factors stimulating the cancer, Bao Jialin, the dean of the
centre, noted that the increased consumption of fat has also led to the
rise. A nutritional survey showed that the intake of animal fat for locals
has increased by a factor of four between from the 1950s to the 1990s.
