After several lectures at five universities on donating sperms to sterile couples, university students have responded well, according to Dr. Li Zhen, principal of the Shanghai Sperm Bank.

Dr. Li and his colleagues presented a series of lectures on sperm donation at Fudan University, National Dong Hwa University, East China Normal University, Shanghai Second Medical University and Tongji University.

"The zeal of the students is far beyond my expectation,"Li said."Till now, almost 300 university students have applied on line to donate sperm.  Many have come all the way to take examinations in Renji Hospital despite the heavy study."

The Renji Hospital Sperm Bank was examined on the techniques of artificial insemination by experts of the WHO last week.  Once passed, Renji Hospital will have more sperm donors.

There are 140 sperm donors now on the sperm bank list, but the optimum number to meet the needs for next year is 400. Dr. Li hopes that the situation may improve because one couple out of 100 needs artificial insemination.
