Shanghai locals face the threat of drug-induced liver diseases due to the improper use of cold medicines and the use of substandard or outdated medications for the treatment of viral hepatitis, the Oriental Morning Post reported today.
Doctor Du Wenmin, vice director of Shanghai Adverse Drug Reaction Inspection Center, indicated that liver damage caused by improper medicines accounts for 10 percent of all adverse drug reactions.  Maximal strength cold medicines, Aspirin, anti-tuberculosis tablets and diet pills will harm the liver when taken improperly. In some cases acute liver failure or death can result.
"Some people prefer to take several different cold medicines or antibiotics at one time, which is very dangerous."Du warned," As for those who are suffering from viral hepatitis, taking the proper dose of a reliable liver-protecting medicine is the most efficient treatment."
