All restaurants claiming their shrimps are from Xuyu County, Jiangsu
Province, and cooked with the local recipe must first obtain approval from the
hometown which has registered the brand of its shrimps before starting business,
today's Youth Daily reported.
On March 3, Xuyu received national brand
authority approval for its name-branded shrimps. It will re-approve its
franchised restaurants in Shanghai and will publish the evaluation standards
next month, according to local officials.
Secretary Wang of Xuyu's
vice Party Secretary said the government is revising franchising standards and
will reexamine the current 87 franchised Xuyu shrimp restaurants in
Shanghai.
The standards will mainly involve two areas: one for technical
standards to determine whether the shrimps are the Xuyu variety; and the other
for quality standards, or the taste of the shrimps.
Xuyu is renowned for
shrimps, particularly the hot-tasting shrimps cooked in the traditional recipe
with 13 spices. Many restaurants in Shanghai are selling fake "Xuyu
shrimps" to attract gourmands.
