Local universities are helping poverty-stricken students to complete their
studies, and promise never to countenance the dropping-out of students due to
financial problems, today's Wenhui Daily reported.
Fudan University has
established a stipend so that poor students can apply for funds which they are
expected to repay after they find jobs, thus helping other needy students
complete their studies in the future.
Fudan also cooperated with a technology
company to set up a text-message platform for which graduates can select to pay
8 yuan (US$0.98) or 15 yuan per month, with revenues used to subsidise poor
students.
Tongji University conducted a survey on the economic backgrounds of
freshmen and established a database of their information. The textbooks of
senior students will be recycled for their use.
The East China Normal
University will purchase accident and medical insurance for poor freshmen, with
each of them granted a package of daily necessities.
Other universities such
as East China University of Science and Technology provided poor students with
guidance on campus life, psychological consultations and social-skills training
to help them improve their competitiveness.
