The Shanghai municipal government will initiate three categories of
scholarships for college students, spokesperson Jiao Yang announced at a
November 16 press conference.
Each year, 1,000 students from needy families
will be entitled to a scholarship of 3,000 yuan (US$371) if they show excellent
academic performance and public-spiritedness.
A further 10,000 students from
"very needy" families will be awarded an allowance totaling 1,500 yuan each
year. The allowance will be paid-out in 10 monthly installments, each of
150 yuan.
Students who volunteer to teach in West China after graduation will
receive an award of 10,000 yuan if they sign a contract for a minimum of two
years.
The city will also make awards to graduates who opt to teach in local
rural areas, but details such as the amount of the award and the number of
students it will be open to are still under deliberation, Jiao said.
