A 17-year-old senior student in Shanghai, seeking to escape the pressures of the pending college-entrance exams, ran away to a mountain resort in Southeast China's Fujian Province. Intending to jump off the mountain and end his life and troubles, he was saved by the actions of local police, today's Haixia News reported.
The youngster, surnamed Li, lives in Zhabei District and studies at a local high school. Hearing of the beautiful scenery of Fujian's Penglai Mountain from his teacher, he decided to go there to end his troubles.
Having checked the location of the mountain online and writing a farewell letter to his parents, he left home and journeyed to the mountain on Monday, where he jumped.
Fortunately, he fell onto a ledge on the mountainside and was found by local residents the next morning, who immediately called in the police.  It was a cold morning, with a temperature of minus 4 degrees Celsius.
He refused police help at first and continued his attempt by climbing the cliff, police said.  But he was finally persuaded to relent and sent to a nearby hospital, where he was provisionally diagnosed as having hip-bone fractures and bruising.  His injuries are not considered life-threatening.
The police called his parents, who flew to Fujian on Wednesday afternoon and met their son the following morning.
Penglai Mountain is in Sanming city, in central Fujian.
