Troubled by the publicity generated, Cai, the first student at East China
Normal University to respond to a recruitment drive for domestic helpers last
week for the upcoming Spring Festival holiday, withdrew her application
yesterday.
Laibang Housekeeping Service Company set up stall at a dining room
in East China Normal University last Thursday, which aroused heated public
debate.
"I've got a job as a tutor, and also the media have recently paid
too much attention to me and even some people close to me cannot understand my
decision. I am feeling pressured and don't want to be in the spotlight, so I
have decided to give it up," Cai explained, adding that she herself is
interested in the job, and her parents were not against it at the time. Cai was
not the only applicant. Seeking discretion, Xiao Mu, a post-graduate student of
Donghua University, asked her boy-friend to register with the housekeeping
service company on her behalf and also leave his contact number. "We both feel
relaxed about the job, as her hometown is in Guizhou which is far away, so she
decided not to return home for the holiday. Being a domestic helper is good
experience and brings income," explained her boyfriend, adding that they didn't
want to be a subject of public interest, so he left his own contact number.
