Permanent residents of Shanghai are better educated, as 8.78 percent of
the permanent population had college degrees or above last year, up 3.34
percentage points from 2000, according to a forum on population development
yesterday.
Last year, a total of 1.61 million residents in the city had at
least an associate degree or a secondary technical title, up 42.65 percent from
2000. The proportion of those working in agricultural (7.2 percent) and
industrial sectors (37.3 percent) declined year-on-year, while those in the
service industry (55.5 percent) were on the rise.
The city's total
population continued to increase, with a growing number of migrant people. By
the end of last year, there were 17.78 million permanent residents and 5.81
million migrants.
