Students abandon university entrance opportunity

Unwilling to go to a university or department not of their top choices, 373
local high school students decide to abandon the chance to pursue high education
this year, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported. Of them, 25 have their
scores of the college entrance examination meet the key university score
requirement, while 33 have scores above the ordinary university level and the
rest 315 meet the three-year college score requirement, according to Qi
Yongchang, office dean of Shanghai Test and Examination Authority. Most of
the students are not satisfied with their performance in this year's exam and
don't want to go to a school not in their top favor, Qi said. They'd prefer
to take next year's admission test after another year of reviewing. Expecting
more withdrawal applications will follow, Qi called local students to be
cautious about the decision and don't easily let go a chance to enter the
university. "After all, situation changes every year and it's not sure they
will do better next time," he said. Even though enrolled in a three-year
program not to their taste, students can improve their education by a lot of
means offered by the city's education institutes, he added. According to the
test regulation, students are allowed to choose three schools of different
levels in their college entrance application before the test. They could be
transferred to a department or program of lower level, which usually has lower
score requirement, if their scores meet the school's base line but miss the top
departments or programs they apply for. This year's college entrance exam
went from June 7 to 9, a month ahead of the normal schedule of the previous
decades.
