Six blind sitters in Shanghai for this year's nationwide college entrance
examinations have gained entrance for university study, as their scores have
passed the basic enrolment requirements, Eastday.com reported. Five of them
will take up four-year study at Shanghai Teachers' University (SHTU) and the
other will take a three-year program at the same university. Shanghai
Disabled People Fund will donated 2,000-yuan (US$242) subsidy each year to the
students to aid them complete the study, as most of them are from families of
low income. Last year, three students took the exams and all were admitted to
SHTU. Based on this experience, SHTU shows full confidence in the disabled
students' capability of study, as its principle Yuan Jinxing said, "The students
are as smart and diligent as normal students." "Except they can't see very
clearly, they are capable of achieving good study". Nine blind students sat
the exams this year. They did so at the same time as other students in the
city, according to the local examination authority. The blind students had
special test papers, however. Two of the students who are totally sightless
took the exams in Braille, while the other seven, with limited sight, had papers
with enlarged characters.
