The enrollment rate of the Shanghai college entrance examination reached a record 85 percent this year, an increase of eight percentage points from a year before, according to the Shanghai Municipal Educational Examinations Authority yesterday.
A total of 91,922 people took part in the college entrance examination this year, with more than 78,400 enrolling in colleges and universities.
Universities and colleges outside the city have fulfilled 89 percent of their recruitment plans in Shanghai this year.
Seventy-three local senior vocational colleges have expanded their recruitment this year from 9,792 students to 12,317.
"These vocational colleges are allowed to set the minimum required marks for their own recruitment, with the lowest even down to 150 points," said an industry analyst.
"Higher education was previously targeting elite students, while currently becomes more popularized," said Li Ruiyang, chief with the Shanghai Municipal Educational Examinations Authority.
Local universities are now targeting different levels of students, with some cultivating elites and some helping students master professional techniques, Li said.
Lowering the threshold for local students to go to universities can help improve the overall educational level in Shanghai, he added.
