City unveils children's development goal
21/11/2003 14:49

Shanghai has set a goal to have local children develop at the level as children in Western developed countries, government officials announced yesterday at the ongoing 2003 Shanghai "For Children" International Forum.
The three-day forum, focused on "Children's Development and the Society's Responsibility", began yesterday to mark the 14th World Children's Day.
Experts from 10-plus countries and regions including China, Japan, Finland and Sweden are attending the conference. They were received by the city's vice mayor Yan Junqi last night.
Shanghai Women's Association, Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences and the Modern Family magazine, sponsor the meeting.
Currently, the development level of children in Shanghai is nearing the goal, according to a recent compendium published this August by Shanghai Statistics Bureau on China's children development status (2001-2010).
By the end of last year, Shanghai children's development level as measured on five of the 12 indexes had reached those of advanced countries, ahead of the city's plan, government officials said at yesterday's forum.
The survival rate of local newborns' is improving while the children's death rate is declining. Children's rights are under effective protection, they added.
