Chinese students abroad decline
17/2/2004 14:50
The number of Chinese students studying abroad reached 117,300 last
year, down 6.3 percent from a year before, the first time for the figure to
decline, eastday.com reported today. According to statistics, the number of
returned Chinese students hit 20,100 last year, the first time for the figure to
exceed 20,000 over the past 25 years. Chinese students studying abroad at
their own expenses refer to those with high school or equivalent degrees
pursuing at least associate degrees in overseas countries, said Cao Guoxing,
director with the international cooperation and exchange department of the
Ministry of Education. The students aged below 18 are excluded from the
category, Cao said, adding that they cannot enjoy the same treatment as those
included in the category. The Ministry of Education established scholarship
for outstanding domestic students abroad at their own expenses last year, in
five countries on a trial basis, including the United States, Japan, UK, France
and Germany, with 100 students granted the scholarship. This year, the
number of such countries will increase to 20, mainly European countries.
