Local firms a magnet for overseas interns

With more overseas companies setting up firms or research and
development centers in the city, Shanghai has become a hot place for foreign
students to spend their internship, the Jiefang Daily reported. Each year,
more than 3,000 students from overseas come to work as interns at local
foreign-invested enterprises, the report said. "We receive applications from
overseas students to work here for internship everyday," said a human resource
official with a German book club Bertelsmann. The official is not identified in
the report. Working experience in Shanghai, an energetic and fast developing
city, most attracts the students, according to Dennis, a German student who is
working with purchasing department of Shanghai Volkswagen Auto Co Ltd, a
Sino-German joint venture. He said, "Everyday in Shanghai we see new things
and have new opportunities. All these are helpful for us to find a good job
after graduation". He said more than half of his 30 classmates choose
Shanghai to spend the internship, which will last three to six months, according
to German universities. These students usually take part in R&D, sales
and marketing with local companies and those on shorter internship period will
work as assistants to overseas employees.
