School security measures effective

Measures taken by primary and secondary schools in Shanghai have been
paying off, as on-campus accidents have been sharply reduced in the past
year. Injuries and deaths that are the responsibility of the schools have
declined by nearly a quarter this year, according to the latest data from the
Shanghai Educational Commission. Many schools, for example, have raised the
nails on classroom walls and moved up the steel shelves of the air conditioners
to prevent injuries to students, the commission said. Frequent checks are
made of worn windows and doors. The Yangpu educational department has
provided training to district physical education teachers, a course that reports
the most frequent student injuries and hurts. To avoid these accidents, some
schools have rearranged the PE curriculum schedule to reduce the number of
students playing on the playground at the same time. Meanwhile, nearly half
the schools in Yangpu have set up a traffic safety education program. The
education is working well: not a single student-involved traffic accident has
occurred at district school gates in the past few years.
