Family education spending the same
1/4/2004 14:52

Local families with different income levels spent similar amounts on education in the first half of last year, according to a survey of 500 families in Shanghai, eastday.com reported today.
Low-income families in Shanghai spent an average of 1,476 yuan (US$178) on education in the first half of last year; mid and low income families spent 1,385 yuan on average; mid and high-income families spent 1,452 yuan and high income families spent an average of 2,079 yuan on education.
High-income families are spending much more than other families on family education and training, said a survey analyst.
Tougher market competition drives many local families to spend more money on education, the analyst pointed out.
The market for service consumption in the city is heated, with soaring expenditures in education, entertainment and communications.
In 2002, residents in local urban areas spent 3,033 yuan per capita on services, accounting for 29 percent of the total consumption.
