Nearly 100,000 candidates in Shanghai will sit for this fall's college
entrance examination, an increase of 10,000 from a year earlier, and local
universities plan to recruit nearly 75,000 students in the city, up four percent
from the previous year, the Jiefang Daily reported today. Among the students
recruited, the ratio of undergraduates to junior college students approaches
6:4. Nearly 45,000 students will be recruited for undergraduate courses this
fall, an increase of 11 percent from a year before, and nearly 30,000 students
for junior college courses, a bit less than the previous year. Three local
junior colleges have become universities this year, which is the main reason for
the increasing number of undergraduate recruitment. The three universities -
Shanghai No.2 Industry University, Shanghai Lixin University of Commerce and
Shanghai Junior College of Finance - plan to recruit 730, 800 and 680
undergraduates this year respectively. Some local universities also increase
recruitment this year. The East China Institute of Politics & Law will add
300 students in its recruitment plan, and Shanghai Teachers University is
raising its numbers by 500.
