University students to have credit records

By the end of next month, students with Shanghai University will be the
first in the city to have their credit records, the Wenhui Daily reported
today. In September last year, Shanghai University signed an agreement with
the Shanghai Credit Information Services Co Ltd to establish credit records for
university students, becoming the first local university to do so. "Data
collection for all university graduates was completed by the end of last month,"
said Xu Wei, vice director with the student's department of Shanghai University.
The credit archives are not simply reports, but a dynamic reflection of a large
amount of student information, Xu pointed out. Credit records include the
students' basic data, tuition payments and records of awards or penalties, Xu
added. However, Shanghai University and the Shanghai Credit Information
Services Co Ltd are discussing what kind of credit information can be released.
"We collect student credit information on a voluntary basis," said Lu
Xudong, vice director with the personal credit information department of the
Shanghai Credit Information Services Co Ltd. This year's freshmen can
voluntarily sign agreements to establish such credit records, and those who
don't sign such agreements are allowed to compensate for the agreements
later. "After the first batch of such records have been offered, we will
gradually expand the records to all our students in the light of the feedback
from the society and students," said Teng Jianyong, director with the student
department of Shanghai University. Certainly, it is easier for a graduate
with a 'clean' record to get loans from banks or to find jobs, but the meaning
of establishing such records is more than that, said an industry
analyst. Such records can help students to gain a strong credit awareness
before joining the work force, the analyst stressed.
