Nearly 70 percent of university students get all of their living expenses
from parents, according to a survey by the Nanjing University of Technology of
undergraduates from 44 disciplines, eastday.com reported today. According to
the survey, a university student spends an average of 11,000 yuan (US$1,325) a
year, and, without counting tuition and accommodation fees, each student spends
on average 5,290 yuan on living costs, including 2,600 yuan on board, 560 yuan
on clothes, 300 yuan on books, 400 yuan on daily necessities, 590 yuan on
studies, 190 yuan on the Internet, 300 yuan on entertainment and 350 yuan on
other expenses. Despite the high living costs, nearly 70 percent of
respondents received all of their living expenses from their families. Among the
17 percent of students who were given partial expenses by their parents, 15
percent met the rest of their expenses through scholarships of about 670 yuan a
year on average; five percent depended on part-time work earning 750-plus yuan
every academic year; five percent live on subsidies and six percent get the
money from other sources. More than 92 percent of students get tuition fees
from their parents; 12 percent get 10 percent of tuition from relatives and
friends and only six percent can qualify for study loans. A university
student spends an average of 11,000 yuan a year, and last year, farmers in
Jiangsu Province earned only 4,239 yuan per capita, indicating that three
farmers can afford a university student's life for a year, the survey
indicated.
