Study load for summer vacation eased
22/6/2004 14:55

Local elementary and middle school students must be able to complete their homework within one hour each day in the upcoming summer vacation, as part of the city's move to ease students' heavy loads, the Youth Post reported today.
Local elementary and middle schools are banned from giving collective classes to students for the summer vacation from July 1 to August 31, with violators severely punished, according to the Shanghai Educational Commission.
In order to guarantee a happy and full summer vacation for local students, Shanghai will begin a new TV channel by August specifically for children. In addition, from the beginning of July to the end of August, all the facilities at the Children's Palace entertainment centers will be open to the students.
Moreover, all the local elementary and middle schools are required to list their facilities that will be open to the public during the holiday. Libraries and computer rooms should be open, but not necessarily sports facilities.
Shanghai Educational Commission will allocate certain funds for the provision of such school facilities.
Shanghai Cultural, Radio, Film and TV Administrative Bureau also promised to improve public cultural facilities such as libraries and art galleries open to the minors for free.
