The University of Hong Kong enrolled 192 students at their own expenses
from the Chinese mainland this academic year (2004-2005), doubling the number of
last year. Sixty students were from Shanghai, eastday.com reported today.
As
of this year, the University of Hong Kong raised the tuitions for mainland
students to HK$60,000 (US$7,692), an increase of HK$18,000 from previous years.
The tuitions are 42.5 percent higher than paid by local students.
Despite
the tuition increases, the university received 2,040 applications this year,
nearly doubling a year earlier.
Among the 192 recruited students, most have
already met the enrollment requirements of domestic key universities, such as
Tsinghua University, Fudan University and Zhejiang University.
