University recruitment reaches its deadline

Out of Shanghai's
more than 100,000 candidates, nearly 85,000 have been enrolled in universities
and colleges this fall, with about 48,000 pursuing undergraduate courses and
more than 8,000 recruited outside of the city, the Jiefang Daily reported
today. A total of 101,387 candidates sat the college entrance examination in
Shanghai for this fall, an increase of 9,464 from the previous year. More than
440 universities (70-plus local universities and more than 370 from other cities
and provinces) vied for candidates. According to statistics, 48,000 students
will pursue undergraduate courses and 38,000 will go for junior college
diplomas, both figures exceed the planned quota. Local universities and
colleges have recruited 78,000 students, with 42,000 pursuing undergraduate
courses and 36,000 for junior college diplomas; universities from outside the
city have recruited a record high of 8,000 local students, while still 934 less
than expected. Twenty-seven disabled Shanghainese candidates were enrolled in
universities this year.
