The lack of counseling is harming college students in Shanghai. College psychological counseling has become the busiest career in today's universities.  According to Chen Zengtang, the secretary-general of Shanghai counseling committee for senior high schools,  there are far from enough psychological consultors on campuses.  The ones there can hardly meet the students' needs in this area.
In overseas colleges or universities,  every 800 to 1,000 students have one counselor,  while at home, one counselor must serve more than 5.000 students. At Shanghai Tongji University, there are over 30 thousand students,  with only 5 counselors.
According to a survey, 5 percent college students suffer from various kinds of psychological problems in China.  However,  A chinese student who wants to seek psychological counseling must make an appointment one week ahead.
More efforts must be made to arouse awareness for the significance of campus counselors.  More investments are also expected to be  made in the related areas, said Mr Chen, adding that it is appropriate that every 3,000 students have one consultor in China.
