Tongji University, the city's famous institution of higher learning in
architecture, oceanography and automobiles, is moving to establish a music
college on campus. The project is arousing considerable public interest.
The
film academy built last year at Tongji University has enrolled its first group
of undergraduates. Now the university is negotiating with the Department
of Music from the Carnegie-Mellon University (CMU) on the issues of cooperative
contracts to develop highly talented graduates with dual-degrees in both Music
and Engineering.
"The development of cultural and social sciences appears to
be more urgent in an engineering university while its own specialties are
flourishing," indicates Wan Gang, a principal from Tongji University.
It's
been a trend for an engineering university to invite the arts onto its
campus. Zhu Yiming, vice section director with the municipal educational
science institution, explained that the market would be the best place to
inspect the success of and necessity for a new specialty.
