Zhou Zhewei and Ye Zhiming, Vice Presidents of Shanghai University, along
with several school principals, were interviewed yesterday on the issue of the
71 undergraduates that had been advised to leave school last December. The
Oriental Morning Post reporter has more on this interview.
Zhou explained
that a lack of motivation and unclear learning goals caused the problems.
Some students considered university a place of entertainment. We will not
indulge those students who have no sense of responsibility to themselves or to
society.
"Expulsion discipline became effective 11 years ago, and since then,
each semester, there were students broking the rules, " Zhou said. "We gave
these 71 expelled students chances to re-select their courses to make up for
their failing scores. However, they failed again, Zhou said
disappointedly.
Another seven teachers at Shanghai University were punished
for their careless omissions in their work which lead to a high failure rate in
their courses.
