The Shanghai traffic authority plans to add more one-way streets after a
trial operation on nine streets has proven effective in speeding traffic flows,
today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.
Citing Zuo Tianfu, a senior traffic
official, the report said the efficiency of the nine streets in moving traffic
has increased an average 10 percent since their introduction this year, with
some sections moving 40 percent more traffic.
As well, vehicle speeds have
increased to between 35 and 45 kilometers per hour from the previous 20 to
25.
Upbeat about these results, the traffic authority will add 31 more
one-way streets this year, and increase the number to 100 within three years,
Zuo said.
At that time, half the roads in the downtown Puxi area within the
Inner Ring Road will be one-way streets.
In addition to the benefits,
however, the one-way strets have sparked complaints from nearby residents about
their inconvenience. Since many bus routes have been re-charted to adapt
to the lanes, passengers have to walk a long distance to another street to take
a return bus.
The traffic authority has said they will take this into
consideration and try to work out ways to shorten the distances as much as
possible.
The distances between on the current nine one way streets are
within 600 meters, or a 10-minute walk, they said.
