The construction of 2010 World Expo sites will not harm local historic buildings, Shanghai Municipal Government spokeswoman Jiao Yang said at yesterday's regular press conference, adding it is unnecessary for local media to worry that it would. Shanghai is always focusing on the protection of such buildings, Jiao said.
In 2003, the city designated 12 historic and cultural conservation areas in downtown with a combined area of 27 km2 and last year the city designated a further 32 such areas, a total of nearly 14 km2, in Pudong new area and also the suburbs.
The city is also planning to put more buildings under protection, Jiao stressed.
