Shanghai will cooperate with Los Angeles on the establishment of environmentally-friendly ports to improve the local environment.
Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa led a delegation to discuss the development of environmentally-friendly ports yesterday at the Shanghai Municipal Port Administration Bureau. In December, Shanghai and Los Angeles will jointly hold the first environmental-protection conference for the Pacific Ocean ports and establish an air-quality organization in the area to cut pollution and improve the environment.
According to the city's 11th Five Year Plan (2006-2010), Shanghai should have a 20 percent decline in its pollutant-emissions. However, the growing capacities of the Yangshan Deep-water Port will threaten the environment at the same time. The Shanghai port will lower energy-consumption and control pollution by introducing advanced overseas technologies and experience, according to the Shanghai Municipal Port Administration Bureau.
