Shanghai is
expected to complete a rail transport network before the 2010 World Expo to ease
local traffic and benefit local residents. Currently five Metro lines are
open, with 80 stations and a total length of 123 kilometers, to undertake a
daily passenger flow of nearly 1.8 million. This number is only 13 percent of
the total residents who take public transport, so the demand is much greater
than the supply. Moreover, during the 2010 Expo period, 70 million people are
expected in the city. By 2010, according to the city's 11th Five Year Plan,
11 Metro lines, totaling 400 kilometers, should be complete. With a raised
capacity of nearly six million passengers a day, it will account for more than
35 percent of public transport load. Besides Metro Line 1, 2, 3 and part of 4
that are in use, Line No. 8, first phase of Line No. 9 and the remainder of No.
4 will be complete by the end of next year. Line No. 7 will be ready by the end
of 2009, the second phase of Line No. 9 and Line No. 10 will be open to the
public by 2010. The newly revealed Metro Line No. 10 will connect a huge
residential area in the city's northeast Xinjiangwan area with Hongqiao Airport.
The 34-kilometer-long line will have stations on Huaihai Rd, Fuxing Rd M.,
Jinlin Rd, Nanjing Rd, Sichuan Rd and Yu Garden area, the city's popular areas
for shopping, dining and entertainment.
