Shanghai is revving up its rail line construction as it expects to
transport 7 million people every hour across the Huangpu River during the World
Expo 2010.
By 2010, there will be a total of 11 rail lines running across the
city, shaping up a rail traffic network extending 400 kilometers.
Six of the
lines, namely Rail Transportation (RT) Line 2, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 9, will cross the
Huangpu River, according to the headquarters of the Shanghai rail transportation
construction office.
They will carry visitors to the World Expo venues in the
Pudong area, a railway line construction official said.
Construction is going
well on the tracks with several thousand workers participating, he
said.
Despite a lot of measures having already been adopted to reduce the
nuisance to nearby residents, the official said inconveniences are inevitable
and asked residents for their support. It¡¯s all being done to create better
traffic conditions in Shanghai, he said.
In the Expo venues, there will be
three railway stations at Yaohua Road, Yuntai Road and W. Gaoke Road. Four RT
Lines, 4,7,8,9, will reach the World Expo venues.
RT Line 4 is connected with
the other 10 rail lines and is able to transport visitors from across the city
to the venues.
RT Line 7, running 35 kilometers with 28 stops, starts from
Baoshan District in the north of the city and reaches Expo venues after passing
Putuo, Jing'an and Xuhui districts. It will become a trunk traffic line of the
Expo¡¯s venues.
RT Line 8 starts from Yangpu District and runs through
Hongkou, Zhabei, Huangpu and Luwan districts. It stops at the center of Expo
Park.
RT Line 9 connects Songjiang District in northwest Shanghai with Expo
venues and runs 48 kilometers through Xuhui, Luwan and Huangpu
districts.
