The twin 40-inch bridge cranes, developed by the Shanghai Zhenhua Port
Machinery Co Ltd, have been approved for regular operation after their one-week
trial proved successful for the second-phase project of the Yangshan Deep-water
port.
Nearly ten container ships have docked or left the second-phase project
of the Yangshan Deep-water port since the trial started last week. A total of 16
giant bridge cranes and 60 tyre cranes will serve the port, with 13 being the
world's most advanced twin 40-inch bridge cranes.
The twin 40-inch bridge
crane has been dubbed as the world's most capable giant, as it can handle four
40-ton, 20-foot containers at the same time, 60 percent more than the efficiency
of ordinary cranes. After the one-week trial operation, it handled nearly 120
TEUs (20-foot equivalent units) of containers per hour, almost double that of
the first-phase port project.
The second-phase project, 1,400-meters at the
water front and a land area of nearly 700,000 square meters, has an annual
capacity of 2.1 million TEUs of containers. The second-phase is expected to
officially open on December 10.
Besides the Yangshan Deep-water project, the
city will take a series of measures to become an international shipping hub.
