25/2/2003 15:02

The 13th East China Fair, the second largest trade fair in the nation, will run from March 1 to 7 at the Shanghai New International Expo Center.

The first East China Fair, with an exhibition space of 20,000 square meters, was held in 1991, involving 6,018 merchants from 71 countries and areas and resulting in US$1.023 billion worth of export deals.

Last year's fair, with an exhibition space increased to 57,500 square meters, welcomed 13,646 merchants from 154 countries and areas, and yielded US$1.681 billion worth of export deals. The number of cities, provinces and autonomous regions attending the fair increased from 7 to 35.

This year's fair will have 2,966 booths, 116 more than last year.

Private firms are expected to play a more important role in the fair this year, with 10 percent of the total 500 exhibition booths for Shanghai going to private firms, up 4.47 percentage points from the year before.

This year overseas companies will not occupy special exhibition halls, but will rather be organized by category, including textiles & garments, light industrial products and works of craftsmanship.

Some 99 enterprises from 13 nations, including the United States, Japan and Canada, have already booked 103 exhibition booths.
