City center to add greenery
28/2/2003 15:03
Central downtown's Huangpu District will add more greenery to
scenic spots, roadsides and riverbanks to enhance the environment this year,
eastday.com has learned.
Huangpu District, where People's Square, Nanjing
Road and city hall are located, is one of the oldest and busiest parts of
Shanghai. Its green coverage is relatively low compared with other areas of the
city.
Some 10 percent of the district is greenland, district officials
said. The average green area per capita was 1.14 square meters at the end of
2002, compared with the city's average of 7.2 square meters.
It will take
at least 15 more years for this most densely populated district to reach a green
coverage near the city's average, officials said.
The district has
started to expand parks and public greenbelts around People's Square. However,
because of space limitation, a key strategy is enhancing existing green areas,
officials said.
This year a large amount of various types of greenery
will be added along the Bund, East Nanjing Road Walkway and other main roadways,
and landscaping will begin on green belts along the Huangpu River and Suzhou
Creek banks. The objective is to have a green space within 500 meters of any
point in the district, officials said. กกกก
