A growing number of employees in the local industrial sector are trying to
boost their competitiveness by joining a contest held for local industrial
staff.
The contest has been organized by the Shanghai Municipal
Industrial Work Party Committee, Shanghai Municipal Economic Commission and
Shanghai Labor Union for three consecutive years from 1999 to 2002.
Some
820,000 employees from the local industrial sector participated in 1999,
submitting more than 200,000 proposals and yielding 1.26 billion yuan (US$152
million) in profits.
Although only 63,000 employees participated last
year, they submitted 235,000 proposals resulting in 1.8 billion yuan in
earnings.
Nearly 90 percent of employees of the Shanghai Electric (Group)
Company (SEC) participated, introducing 408 new products and increasing
production value by 12.9 billion yuan.
Such contests are an efficient way
to enhance technological progress, management strategies and product development
for a company and boost competitiveness, said an industry
analyst.
